Cases on the decline

SALYERSVILLE – At the slowest increase in cases in months, Magoffin County reported seven new cases of COVID-19 since last week.

To date, 1,010 people from Magoffin County have tested positive for the novel coronavirus, with only seven new this week. At press time, no one from the county is hospitalized for the virus.

The Magoffin County Health Department has distributed 100 doses of the vaccine to people 60 years old and older this week, with Magoffin County Public Health Director and Salyersville Mayor James “Pete” Shepherd noting that they are currently still people in that age group. He said he hopes they will be able to open the eligibility more in the next week or so. He said they have also distributed 100 second doses of the vaccine this week, as well.

Shepherd said that the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine is available to the Magoffin County Health Department, but that they plan to continue to distribute the Moderna vaccine, explaining that the Moderna has a higher effectiveness rate.

People 60 and over, as well as healthcare workers and essential frontline employees, can call the health department at 606-349-6212 to schedule an appointment to receive the vaccine.

Shepherd also noted that the Floyd County Health Department has extra doses of the vaccine and people from Magoffin can also be vaccinated there by calling 886 -2788 and asking for Leslie.

Walgreens has started taking appointments for the vaccine, with people able to go online at www.walgreens.com to schedule their first and second appointment. People will have to fill out a brief questionnaire to determine eligibility and make or sign into their Walgreens account to schedule the appointments. As of Monday, the local Walgreens was distributing the Pfizer vaccine.

Also available in this region, people can still call or go online to get on the vaccine list at any of the following providers: Paul B. Hall Medical Center, Highlands ARH, Pikeville Medical Center, Kings Daughters in Ashland, ARH West Liberty and Saint Claire Regional Medical Center in Morehead.

Shepherd also explained that having the virus once does not make people immune to catching it, again, with the CDC stating that it will generally protect the person for up to 90 days, though there have been at least two cases in Magoffin County where people have tested positive for the virus, again, less than 90 days after having COVID-19.

COVID-19 and Schools
Magoffin County Schools opened up their in-person services this week, giving all students signed up for in-person instruction four days of classes at the school each week, which started Monday.

With the end of the school year approaching, Magoffin County High School announced this week that they will be holding prom this year on May 15. While more information will be released closer to the date, they are listing the event as a junior-senior prom with the theme “Black and White Masquerade.”

While Magoffin County Schools have continued to deliver meals to students almost daily since the pandemic began a year ago, they announced that starting next week, virtual students’ meals will have to be picked up at the schools weekly.

Magoffin County Schools posted the following to Facebook on Tuesday, as well as announced the change with a OneCall notice:

Buses will continue to deliver meals to virtual students until March 18.

Beginning on March 19, Magoffin County Schools will no longer be delivering meals each day by bus. However if your student is virtual Monday through Thursday and wishes to receive meals, we will be offering a box of meals that can be picked up at the school.

The pickup day will be Friday 11:30 am to 2:30 pm. and will begin March 19th. If your child is virtual only and you are interested in picking up a box please call the school to have your child added to the list. Please call before Thursday if you wish to get a box.
