Council talks gas prices, sets Trick-or-Treat Night

SALYERSVILLE – The Salyersville City Council met on Monday, September 19, discussing gas prices and setting Trick-or-Treat Night for the city.

Salyersville Mayor James “Pete” Shepherd said they have figured out that by purchasing gas for city vehicles at wholesale, they get gas approximately 30 cents cheaper per gallon than local gas stations.

“It is a substantial savings we get through [Action Petroleum],” Shepherd said.

Councilman Paul Montgomery asked Shepherd if there were anything they could do to influence the ongoing gas price discrepancies between stations in Magoffin County and surrounding areas, with Shepherd saying there was nothing that to his knowledge the city has no power or influence to change those prices.

“The attorney general has been notified,” Shepherd said. “Evidently, this area is basically based on what Speedway gets and that’s what these guys up here are going to charge. They are in a region where their distributor brings the gas from. It’s a matter of greed. Looks to me like if they lowered it up there on the Parkway, and these guys have stations all over Kentucky, too, and they sell it for cheaper than Speedway does, so I don’t know why they can’t do that here.”

In other news, Trick-or-Treat Night has been set in the city limits for Halloween, Monday, October 31, and the “Halloween in the Park,” which was held for the first time last year, will be held Thursday, October 27. Any business that wants to set up can come and have a booth at the City Park (across from City Hall) starting at 12 p.m. through 4 p.m., which will serve school-age children, in conjunction with Magoffin County Schools, and then, again, from 5:30 to 8 p.m., and then they will hold the Ghost Dance in the street after that. He said any business or group who wants to participate to contact city hall so they can plan the event.

The next regularly-scheduled Salyersville City Council meeting is tentatively slated for October 17.
