SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is seeking a new football head coach after Coach John DeRossett announced he had retired on Sunday, April 5.
DeRossett guided Magoffin County for four seasons (2022-2025). Prior to coming to Magoffin County, DeRossett was Prestonsburg’s head coach for 22 seasons (1996-2017). He guided Prestonsburg to a state runner-up finish in 2001. DeRossett was an assistant coach at Cabell Midland (W.Va.) in 2021. Prior to coaching at Cabell Midland, DeRossett was an assistant coach on the University of Pikeville football program’s coaching staff.
The Magoffin County Board of Education has posted the opening for football head coach. Each applicant must have a high school diploma and experience is preferred.
Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8. The Hornets compiled a 3-7 record in the 2025 high school football season.
Magoffin County’s 2026 season is scheduled to kick off in August.
