Fatal wreck on Parkway

SALYERSVILLE – A Floyd County man died as a result of a two-vehicle collision on the Mountain Parkway near the KY Rt. 30 exit on Wednesday night.

At approximately 7:44 p.m. on October 18, 2023, Kentucky State Police Pikeville Post was notified of a two-vehicle fatal collision. Upon their arrival and through their investigation, police discovered Justin Jarrell, 26 years old of Dana, was operating a 2020 Honda Accord when his vehicle struck a bridge embankment and collided with a 2003 Freightliner Motorhome, operated by Thomas Lidster of Robinson Creek.

Jarrell was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Magoffin County Coroner’s Office.

The investigation is ongoing by KSP Accident Reconstructionist, Trooper James Cress.

Trooper Cress was assisted on scene by KSP Post 9 personnel, Salyersville Police Department, Magoffin County Sheriff’s Office, Magoffin County Rescue Squad, Salyersville Volunteer Fire Department, and Patriot Ambulance Service.

Before dispatch received the call about the wreck, they received complaints of a vehicle matching Jarrell’s car description driving on the wrong side of the road, nearly missing another motorhome, and allegedly side-swiping another vehicle prior to hitting the bridge embankment and colliding with the 2003 Freightliner Motorhome.

With the ongoing construction on the Mountain Parkway, there have been numerous reports of people accidentally driving on the wrong side of the road in that section of the road. Please use caution in that area and watch for barrel placements and signage as roadwork continues.

Jarrell’s funeral was held Monday from the Hall Funeral Home in Martin, Kentucky. He was the son of Belinda Click Jarrell and the late Duran Jarrell.
