SALYERSVILLE – Multiple roads were closed in Magoffin County during the April 3 and 4 flooding and rock/mudslides, with some people having to be rescued from stalled vehicles and people evacuated from their homes, as the city and county issuing states of emergency.

Magoffin County Judge/Executive Matthew Wireman issued a state of emergency for Magoffin County on April 4, which gives them access to more emergency management resources, posting the following:

Due to widespread flooding across Magoffin County caused by heavy rainfall beginning April 2nd/3rd, 2025 and forecast through Sunday April 6th, 2025, I have officially declared a State of Emergency to ensure swift response and recovery efforts.

Our Emergency Management Team, first responders, and local agencies are actively addressing dangerous conditions, including impassable roadways and reported damage to homes and infrastructure. Residents are urged to prioritize safety, avoid flooded areas, and report emergencies to 911.

For those displaced due to flooding, call the non-emergency dispatch line at 606-349-4403, and we will have the Lloyd M. Hall Community Center available as a shelter. If you or someone you know needs a safe place to stay, please take advantage of this resource.

Under the emergency provisions, I am authorizing expedited response efforts, including waiving certain formalities to accelerate public work, resource allocation, and contracting for emergency services. Our priority is swift action to support affected residents and restore critical infrastructure.

Stay tuned for updates, and please take all necessary precautions.

Matthew C. Wireman
Magoffin County Judge/Executive

Similarly, Salyersville Mayor Stanley Howard also declared a state of emergency for the city, also posting on Friday the following: “I’ve declared a State of Emergency for Salyersville. Please keep an eye on the weather forecast for the next few days. Check in on neighbors who might need assistance, especially older adults, people with disabilities, or people living alone. And don’t forget to look after your livestock and pets. Everyone, stay safe!”

Thankfully, Salyersville saw less rain than expected over the weekend, leaving this area in better shape than other areas of the state.
