SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County has finalized and released its schedule for the 2023 high school football season.
Following realignment, Magoffin County will continue to compete in Class 3A, District 8. Along with Magoffin County, Class 3A, District 8 includes Belfry, Estill County, Lawrence County and Powell County.
“It is good being around for a year now and getting to put a schedule together with the new 2023 realignment that will last for two years,” Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett commented. “We’ve got two solid home scrimmages with multiple area teams participating. We open up in the Recreation Bowl in Mount Sterling. We appreciate Coach (Michael) Caba for extending an invitation. Our district changed some. We picked up Estill County and Powell County. Belfry chose to play up in Class 3A and remains in the district, along with Lawrence County. We also have Russell, Lewis County, Martin County and Morgan County on the non-district portion of our schedule. It is a very competitive and challenging schedule, so we will see how things shape up. It will be here before we know it. I’m looking forward to coaching this bunch. They are working hard in the offseason.”
Magoffin County is scheduled to host back-to-back scrimmages in August. Paintsville, Breathitt County, Floyd Central and Pike County Central will each visit Magoffin County in the preseason.
The Hornets are scheduled to kick off the 2023 high school football season at Montgomery County in the tradition-rich Recreation Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 19. Magoffin County graduate Michael Caba guides Montgomery County.
Continuing on the road, Magoffin County is slated to visit Lewis County on Friday, Aug. 25.
The Hornets are scheduled to host Leslie County for a home opener on Friday, Sept. 1.
Magoffin County has other away games on tap versus Russell (Friday, Sept. 8), Lawrence County (Friday, Oct. 6) and Estill County (Friday, Oct. 20).
The Hornets are due to host Martin County (Friday, Sept. 15), Belfry (Friday, Sept. 22), Powell County (Friday, Sept. 29) and Morgan County (Friday, Oct. 27) for additional home games.
