Hornets 5-5 through first 10 games

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is 5-5 through its first 10 games in the 2022-23 boys’ high school basketball season.

The Hornets have notched wins over Paintsville, Wren (S.C.), James River (Va.), Daniel Boone (Tenn.) and Wolfe County.

Magoffin County has dropped games to Perry County Central, Morgan County, Livingston Academy (Tenn.), Avon (Ind.) and Huntington (W.Va.).

Prior to Christmas, Magoffin County finished runner-up to Livingston Academy in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic. The Hornets compiled a 2-1 record in the holiday event held in Gatlinburg, Tenn.

Magoffin County finished 1-2 in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic, a holiday event held at Belfry High School Dec. 28-30. The Hornets beat Daniel Boone in between losses to Avon and Huntington during the Belfry-hosted holiday event. Huntington outlasted Magoffin County 72-70 in overtime in the final round of the Mountain Schoolboy Classic on Friday, Dec. 30.

Magoffin County returned to the win column earlier in the week. The Scott Castle-coached Hornets pulled away to defeat visiting Wolfe County 65-46 on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Magoffin County is slated to visit Wolfe County for a regular season finale on Thursday, Feb. 16.

The Hornets have additional regular season games remaining versus Martin County, Belfry, Floyd Central, West Carter, Johnson Central, Morgan County, Letcher County Central, East Ridge, Paintsville, Shelby Valley and Pike County Central.

Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Martin County for a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 7. Tip-off for the Magoffin County-Martin County matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. in Inez.
