Hornets come up short in district clash with Cardinals

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County came up short as Martin County held on to win 76-72 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

As a result of the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-1 in the 57th District.

Martin County improved to 3-0 in the 57th District after posting the win.

The Hornets and Cardinals battled throughout the 57th District boys’ basketball matchup.

Starting strong, Martin County outscored Magoffin County 22-13 in the opening quarter.

Reigning 15th Region champion Martin County led 40-34 at halftime.

Remaining out in front midway through the second half, Martin County led 58-52 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Martin County shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field. The Cardinals shot 57.1 percent (eight-of-14) from three-point range, exceling beyond the arc.

Martin County shot 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the free throw line.

Luke Hale scored 26 points to lead Martin County to the win. Hale was five-for-five from three-point range in Martin County’s win.

Finishing second in scoring for the Cardinals, Brayden McKenzie netted 14 points.

Delivering a double-double for Martin County, Jacob Sturgell scored 13 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Aiding Martin County in its victory, Peyton Davis and Devan Maynard added 10 points apiece.

Rounding out Martin County’s scoring, Bryson Dials chipped in three points.

Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 45 points to lead the Hornets. Barnett thrived offensively and defensively.

Accompanying Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Zane Whitaker netted 10 points.

Accounting for Magoffin County’s additional scoring in the district matchup, Ethan Salyer and Walker Russell added six points apiece while Grayson Whitaker contributed five points.
