Hornets defeat Floyd Central for first win

EASTERN – Magoffin County notched its first win in the 2021 high school softball season on the road on Friday, April 2, defeating 15th Region rival Floyd Central 11-2.

Presley Smith and Holly Handshoe each homered for visiting Magoffin County.

In the circle for the Hornets, pitcher Jaden Williams limited Floyd Central to two runs on four hits while allowing only two walks and recording nine strikeouts.

The Hornets moved ahead and forced Floyd Central to play from behind. Excelling offensively, Magoffin County plated 11 runs on 20 hits.

Helping her pitching cause at the plate, Williams was 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Williams doubled twice for the Hornets.

Smith, Jaylynn Lafferty and Emilee Bailey collected three hits apiece for former 15th Region champion Magoffin County.

Katie Howard, Ashlyn Patrick and Holly Handshoe added two hits apiece for the Hornets. Handshoe delivered four RBIs while Lafferty and Howard drove in two runs apiece.

Smith drove in one run for Magoffin County and led the Hornets on the base paths, recording two steals.

Chipping in offensively for Magoffin County, Scarlett McCarty provided hit.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Floyd Central for a late-season game on May 13.
