Hornets end regular season 3-3

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County ended the 2020 high school football regular season 3-3.

The Hornets have qualified for the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.
Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach Chris Gamble, notched wins over Betsy Layne, Martin County and Floyd Central during the 2020 high school football regular season. The Hornets dropped regular season games to Belfry, Lawrence County and Pike County Central.

Due to COVID-19, Magoffin County hasn’t played since mid-October.

The Hornets pulled away to beat Betsy Layne 36-8 in a home opener on Friday, Sept. 11.

Turning in an even more impressive performance in Week 2, Magoffin County dismantled Martin County 56-8 on Friday, Sept. 18.

Reigning state champion Belfry dealt Magoffin County its first loss in a Class 3A, District 8 matchup on Friday, Sept. 25, beating the Hornets 59-20.

But the Hornets bounced back, upending host Floyd Central 44-24 on the road in a key Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct. 9. The victory over Floyd Central allowed Magoffin County to advance to the postseason.

In a shootout between district rivals, homestanding Pike County Central topped Magoffin County 82-52 on Saturday, Oct. 17.
Magoffin County’s final three regular season games were canceled due to COVID-19. However, Magoffin County has continued to prepare for the postseason.

The Hornets compiled a 1-3 record in Class 3A, District 8 during the regular season.
