BELFRY — Belfry managed to limit visiting Magoffin County in a boys’ high school basketball regular season finale, defeating the Hornets 58-33 on Friday, Feb. 18.
The Hornets slipped into the loss column after defeating Floyd Central two days earlier. Magoffin County was forced to play from behind in the boys’ high school basketball game.
Belfry shot 50 percent (24-of-48) from the field. The Pirates shot 33.3 percent (three-of-nine) from three-point range.
Belfry shot 53.8 percent (seven-of-13) from the free throw line.
Controlling the backboards, Belfry outrebounded the Hornets 33-14.
Sal Dean scored 17 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead the Pirates. Accompanying Dean in double figures for Belfry, DeMahjae Clark scored 11 points.
Narrowly missing double figures for the Pirates, Jonathan Banks netted nine points.
The additional scorers for Belfry in the late-season boys’ high school basketball matchup were Makaden Maynard (eight points), Bol Kuir (six points), Cameron Stafford (five points) and Caden Woolum (two points).
Magoffin County shot 28.3 percent (13-of-46) from the field. The Hornets shot 25 percent (six-of-24) from three-point range.
Magoffin County connected on one of two free throw attempts.
Walker Russell scored 14 points to lead the Hornets. Russell was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in scoring.
In addition to Russell, Magoffin County received scoring from Spencer Howard (six points), Aden Barnett (five points), Case Adkins (three points), Brennan Hansen (three points) and Zane Whitaker (two points).
Howard and Barnett combined to pace Magoffin County inside, pulling down five rebounds apiece.
