Hornets open preseason practice

SALYERSVILLE — Returning to the field following the conclusion of the KHSAA Dead Period, Magoffin County opened preseason practice on Monday, July 11.

Class 3A, District 8 member Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach John DeRossett, features several talented returning players. Magoffin County built momentum throughout the offseason. Shortly after being announced as the Hornets’ head coach in January, DeRossett introduced his team to an offseason workout program. Numerous members of the Magoffin County football team made strides throughout the offseason.

The Hornets concluded the 2021 high school football season 6-4. Magoffin County suffered a season-ending loss to District 8 rival Lawrence County in the opening round of the 2021 KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.

The Hornets are scheduled to compete in numerous 7-on-7 games over the next two weeks, making trips to multiple colleges for tournaments.

Magoffin County’s 2022 schedule includes games versus Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County. The Hornets are scheduled to visit former district counterpart Breathitt County for a season opener on Friday, Aug. 19.

Magoffin County is slated to host Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County and Belfry for home games in the 2022 high school football season. The Hornets have additional away games on tap versus Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.
