Hornets open preseason practice

SALYERSVILLE – Returning to the gridiron shortly after the Kentucky High School Athletic Association Dead Period ended, Magoffin County conducted its first preseason practice on Monday, July 12.

Under the direction of head coach Chris Gamble, Magoffin County reached the 2020 Class 3A Playoffs. Following a loss to perennial state title contender Belfry in the opening round of the postseason, Magoffin County exited the COVID-shortened 2020 high school football season 3-4.

The Hornets notched wins over Betsy Layne, Martin County and Class 3A, District 8 rival Floyd Central in 2020. Magoffin County defeated Floyd Central to reach the 2020 Class 3A Playoffs.

Excitement is building for Magoffin County’s latest gridiron campaign. The Hornets will compete in two separate scrimmages prior to kicking off the 2021 high school football season.

Magoffin County competes with Belfry, Floyd Central, Lawrence County and Pike County Central in Class 3A, District 8.

The Hornets’ 2020 schedule includes regular season games versus Breathitt County (Aug. 20), Prestonsburg (Aug. 27), Knott County Central (Sept. 3), Bellevue (Sept. 10), Lawrence County (Sept. 17), Belfry (Sept. 24), Floyd Central (Oct. 8), Pike County Central (Oct. 15), Clay County (Oct. 22) and Morgan County (Oct 29).
