Hornets outlast Golden Eagles in overtime

INEZ — Determined Magoffin County outlasted Johnson Central 73-67 in overtime in the semifinals of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament at Martin County High School on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

After registering the win, Magoffin County improved to 17-12. The Hornets advanced to the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game.

Following the loss, Johnson Central dropped to 13-13. The loss eliminated Johnson Central from the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Magoffin County shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the field. The Hornets shot 33.3 percent (six-of-18) from three-point range.

Magoffin County shot 72.4 percent (21-of-29) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett poured in 38 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Barnett made 13 of 17 two-point field goal attempts.

Joining Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker scored 11 points and Zane Whitaker netted 10 points.

Aiding Magoffin County in its win, Walker Russell posted six points, Noah Sammons contributed five points and Ethan Salyer added three points.

Johnson Central shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the field. The Golden Eagles shot 33.3 percent (five-of-15) from three-point range.

Johnson Central shot 75 percent (18-of-24) from the free throw line.

Austin Slone scored 29 points and pulled down eight rebounds to pace Johnson Central in the district tournament game.

Along with Slone reaching double figures for Johnson Central, Brayden Shepherd scored 13 points and Kyle Rose netted 12 points.

Barely missing double figures for Johnson Central, Dawson Montgomery posted nine points.

Chipping in offensively, Andrew Meeks (three points) and Mason McKenzie (one point) accounted for the rest of Johnson Central’s scoring.
