Hornets ranked eighth in Preseason 15th Region Rankings

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County is ranked eighth in the Preseason 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Rankings.

The Hornets, under the direction of head coach Scott Castle, compete in the 57th District.

Following a loss to rival Paintsville in the semifinals of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited the 2020-21 season 12-12.

Leading scorer Aden Barnett is among the players back for the Hornets. A sophomore guard, Barnett averaged 23 points and five rebounds per game for Magoffin County during the 2020-21 boys’ high school basketball season.

The Hornets are ranked ahead of Lawrence County (9), Floyd Central (10), Pike County Central (11), Prestonsburg (12), Shelby Valley (13), Phelps (14) and Jenkins (15) in the Preseason 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Rankings, which were released in November.

Magoffin County is listed behind Johnson Central (7), Betsy Layne (6), Belfry (5), East Ridge (4), Martin County (3), Pikeville (2) and reigning 15th Region champion Paintsville (1) in the preseason rankings.

The Hornets opened preseason practice in mid-October.
