Hornets roll to win over June Buchanan

SALYERSVILLE — Nearly reaching triple digits, Magoffin County beat June Buchanan 96-32 in a boys’ high school basketball game on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The Hornets improved to 3-5 after registering the win.

Reigning 15th Region champion Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, claimed its second win in three games.

Magoffin County excelled offensively, shooting 61.5 percent (40-of-65) from the field. The Hornets shot 50 percent (eight-of-16) from three-point range.

Magoffin County made eight of 18 free throw attempts, shooting 61.5 percent from the free throw line.

Walker Russell led Magoffin County with a double-double, scoring 27 points and clearing out 12 rebounds.

Accompanying Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Parker Bowling scored 20 points and Evan Reed netted 10 points.
Magoffin County received scoring from 11 different players. Along with the three scorers in double figures, Tayte Hall (eight points), Blake Wireman (six points), Jackson Gilliland (six points), Michael Trusty (five points), Dason Burchett (four points), Caleb Lovely (four points), Noah Gibson (three points) and Trey Rudd (three points) contributed to Magoffin County’s offensive attack.

Active inside for Magoffin County, Lovely secured nine rebounds.

Defensively, Magoffin County limited June Buchanan’s offensive attack throughout the matchup. The scorers for June Buchanan were Colton Hicks (eight points), Landon Jent (seven points), Brycen Smith (seven points), Jacob Hammonds (four points), Brody Hall (three points) and Jeremiah Miller (three points).
