Hornets Set to Host Betsy Layne in Season Opener

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County is set to host rival Betsy Layne in a much-anticipated high school football season opener on Friday, Sept. 11.

The Hornets and Bobcats are familiar foes.

Magoffin County claimed a victory over Betsy Layne during the 2019 high school football season. The Chris Gamble-coached Hornets held on to beat the Bobcats 36-28 when the two teams met in Betsy Layne in 2019.

Magoffin County compiled a 3-7 record during the 2019 high school football season, notching wins over Betsy Layne, Knott County Central and Morgan County.

Betsy Layne competes in Class 1A, District 6. The Bobcats, under the direction of former Magoffin County head coach Scotty McCoy, concluded the 2019 high school football season 4-7 following a shutout loss to Raceland in the opening round of the Class 1A State Playoffs. Betsy Layne posted wins over Morgan County, East Ridge, Fairview and Jenkins during the 2019 season.

In all, 400 tickets will be available for Magoffin County’s season opener.

Magoffin County Athletic Director Neil West was taking orders for tickets on Wednesday evening.

A total of 100 tickets were allotted to Betsy Layne. Any of Betsy Layne’s tickets that are unsold will be returned to Magoffin County.

High school football teams across the state are preparing for season openers.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Betsy Layne football game is set for 7:30 p.m.

Nov. 6 at Knott County Central, 7:30 p.m.
