SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County was an improved team during the shortened 2020 high school football season. The Hornets overcame adversity to advance to the 2020 KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs.
Following a loss to reigning state champion Belfry in the opening round of the Class 3A Playoffs, Magoffin County concluded the 2020 high school football season 3-4.
The Hornets claimed wins over Betsy Layne, Martin County and Floyd Central during the 2020 high school football season.
Magoffin County dropped games to Belfry, Lawrence County and Pike County Central. Belfry defeated the Hornets during both the regular season and in the playoffs.
“I’m proud of the kids,” said Magoffin County Coach Chris Gamble. “It had been six seasons since we made the playoffs. When we started, I told the kids that the first thing we had to do was to win some games.”
Offensively, Magoffin County averaged 310 yards per game during the 2020 high school football season.
The Hornets started the 2020 high school football season strong, notching back-to-back wins over Betsy Layne and Martin County. Magoffin County outscored its first two opponents 92-16.
Magoffin County will lose 13 seniors off its 2020 roster. The Hornets’ roster grew to 51 players during the 2020 season. However, Magoffin County finished the 2020 season with less than half of its largest roster size.
COVID-19 has the Hornets sidelined early in the offseason. Gamble is hoping his team will be able to return to the weight room soon.
