Hornets shut out Lewis County in Founders Day Bowl

SALYERSVILLE — Breaking into the win column, Magoffin County shut out Lewis County 40-0 in the Founders Day Bowl on Friday, Aug. 30.

After registering the win, Magoffin County evened its record to 1-1
Following the loss, Lewis County fell to 0-2.

Magoffin County led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter and continued to extend its lead throughout the game.

The Hornets entered halftime leading 14-0 and eventually put the game completely out of Lewis County’s reach.

Magoffin County led 34-0 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Braxton Montgomery paced Magoffin County offensively, rushing 13 times for 133 yards.

Blake Wireman led the Hornets in scoring, rushing nine times for 122 yards and four touchdowns.

Aiding Magoffin County in its shutout win, Dason Burchett and Trey Rudd added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Hornets.

Magoffin County thrived on offense, defense and special teams.

Defensively, Magoffin County recorded its first shutout since blanking rival Morgan County 47-0 in a regular season finale on Oct. 27. 2023.

“We had a great week of practice which gives us a chance on gameday,” Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett said following his team’s win. “We were able to run the ball effectively and stop Lewis County’s running game. We were sound in our special teams and our offensive linemen and skill players blocked effectively.”

Magoffin County will visit Leslie County for its third game in the 2024 high school football season on Friday, Sept. 6.
