Hornets start strong in preseason

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is back on the gridiron and preparing for the 2023 high school football season.

The Hornets will kick off the 2023 high school football season in less than one month. Magoffin County is slated to visit Montgomery County for its season opener on Saturday, Aug. 19.

The Hornets and Indians are matched up in the tradition-rich Recreation Bowl.

Magoffin County excelled throughout the offseason, making strides through its strength and conditioning program.

“We’ve had a productive start to the preseason,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “We competed in a couple of off-campus 7-on-7s and hosted a few of those at our place. We by no means are where we want to be, but we have a plan to get there. It is a daily process, and we are seeing improvement. Several of our players came back stronger than when they left for the Dead Period. We still put a great emphasis on our strength program, and we feel that precedes everything we do. We’ve got a good bunch of players who show up every day and work hard.”

Magoffin County will feature several experienced players in addition to some individuals with less experience and newcomers on the gridiron in the 2023 high school football season.

“We have all levels of football experience on our team from those who have played little to seasoned players,” said DeRossett. “We feel all of those players will contribute to reaching our goals in 2023.”

Players and coaches are putting in work for the Hornets.

“Our coaches are doing a great job and have a plan with their position groups daily,” added DeRossett. “I look forward every day to getting to hang out with these guys and coach them in football.”

Prior to kicking off the 2023 high school football season, Magoffin County will be on the field for a pair of scrimmages.

Magoffin County competes in Class 3A, District 8. Along with Magoffin County, Class 3A, District 8 includes Belfry, Estill County, Lawrence County and Powell County. Lawrence County is the reigning Class 3A, District 8 champion.

The Hornets resumed preseason practice at the start of the week.
