Hornets suffer district loss to Belfry

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County couldn’t overcome an early deficit as Belfry pulled away to win 42-12 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 22.

Following the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-5 overall and opened 0-1 in Class 3A, District 8.

Belfry improved to 3-3 overall and opened 1-0 in Class 3A, District after posting the win.

A perennial state title contender, Belfry rushed 44 times for 485 yards and five touchdowns.

Caden Woolum led the Pirates, rushing 12 times for 210 yards and three touchdowns.

Producing through the air as well as on the ground, Woolum completed two passes for seven yards and one touchdown.

Contributing to Belfry’s offensive attack, Jeremiah Allen and Drew Young added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Pirates.

Adding another touchdown for Belfry, Ace Caudill was on the receiving end of Woolum’s scoring pass.

Defensively for Belfry, Koy Queen delivered a team-high eight tackles while Eli Caudill recorded one interception.

Magoffin County rushed 19 times for 133 yards but never reached the endzone via the ground.

Ian McCarty led Magoffin County on the ground, rushing 10 times for 90 yards.

Following McCarty in Magoffin County’s rushing attack, Aden Barnett took eight carries for 37 yards.

Barnett paced Magoffin County through the air, completing four passes for 72 yards and two touchdowns.

Russell Cruz and Dason Burchett each hauled in one touchdown pass reception for the Hornets.

Curtis Jenkins led Magoffin County’s defensive unit, delivering a game-high nine tackles for the Hornets.

Excelling on offense and defense for the Hornets, McCarty posted eight tackles.

Brayden Standifer added seven tackles for the Hornets in the district matchup.

Aiding Magoffin County defensively, Cruz, Braxton Montgomery, Caleb Perkins, Aiden Collett and John Fultz contributed four tackles apiece.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Powell County for another Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 29.
