SALYERSVILLE — The Magoffin County football team is making strides in the offseason through its strength and conditioning program.
Multiple players have stepped up for the Magoffin County football team during its latest offseason.
“Our strength and conditioning program is having great success thus far,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “We have in-school players, after-school players and the middle school program has several of its players coming up to workout. It is a daily process of discipline and hard work that you can see from our recent combine. We had around 120 participants in the combine and all of their performances are improving. We are having a large combine in June that is open to all schools.”
Leaders in Magoffin County’s strength and conditioning program wear maroon proudly.
“We believe in earning things and looked at what some other schools were doing,” confided DeRossett. “We decided on giving our high attention players a maroon workout shirt. All of our players get a clean white shirt and shorts to workout in everyday. We explained that it should be a goal of all of our players to get a maroon workout short. We started with eight guys recently. We have 10 to 12 that are close. But at the same time, you can lose your maroon shirt by not earning it everyday. It is a fun time on Magoffin Mountain. Coach (Tonya) Ward has a track full of athletes everyday and many of our football players participate in multiple sports. We all work together. I commend our coaching staff. They will train players who are playing other sports most anytime. We want our athletes to understand that we are training them to run faster, jump higher and be powerful in any sport they play. Our job is developing the athlete to reach their full potential. Numbers and hard data don’t lie. We have 4.5 40s, 10-foot broad jumpers and several who can dunk a basketball with ease. Our pro shuttle guys have gone as low as 4.2. Our players are understanding the importance of what they do when at the end of the season they ran a 5.0 pro shuttle and now their time at the combine is 4.6 or faster in some cases. You can have a great offensive and defensive plan, but to our staff, physical preparation comes before both of them. We pick up new players every week because they see the hard work and the results we are getting. Lots of people are down on this generation, but not us. We believe young people want a program with high standards and expectations. We love our players and want to train them in a way to reach their full potential both on and off the field.”
Several experienced players are preparing to return to the field for Magoffin County in the 2023 high school football season.
Magoffin County is scheduled to kick off the 2023 high school football season at Montgomery County in the Recreation Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 19.
