Hornets to host Prestonsburg for home opener

SALYERSVILLE — After dropping its season opener to Breathitt County, Magoffin County is preparing to host Prestonsburg for its second game in the 2022 high school football season.

First-year Magoffin County head coach John DeRossett guided the Prestonsburg football program earlier in his career.

Ben Lafferty and Aden Barnett combined to lead Magoffin County in its season opener. Breathitt County blanked the Hornets 43-0 in Jackson during the opening week of the 2022 high school football season. However, Magoffin County is expected to show much improvement in its second outing.

Prestonsburg managed to outlast Floyd County rival Betsy Layne 28-25 in its season opener. The Blackcats rushed 43 times for 215 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Betsy Layne. Leading Prestonsburg on the ground in the season opener, Ethan Jarvis rushed 23 times for 126 yards and one touchdown. In addition to Jarvis, Jon Little and Alex Harris added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Blackcats in the season opener.

Quarterback Reece Hamilton paced Prestonsburg through the air in the season opener, completing four of seven passes for 107 yards and one touchdown. Dalton Elliott was on the receiving end of Hamilton’s scoring strike.

The Hornets pulled away to beat Magoffin County 34-6 in 2021.

Magoffin County has additional regular season games remaining versus Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Prestonsburg football game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Salyersville.
