Hornets to visit Lewis County for second game

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is set to visit Lewis County for its second game in the 2023 high school football season on Friday, Aug. 25.

Both the Hornets and the Lions will be looking to break into the win column.

Magoffin County and Lewis County are Class 3A rivals.

The Hornets are 0-1 after pushing host Montgomery County in the Recreation Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 19. Montgomery County held on to defeat the Hornets 21-14.

Magoffin County will compete in Class 3A, District 8 later in the season.

The Lions are 0-1 after suffering a slim loss to Nicholas County in a season opener on Friday, Aug. 18. Nicholas County edged the Lions 32-30.

Lewis County will compete in Class 3A, District 6 later in the season.

The Lions rushed 34 times for 237 yards and four touchdowns in the loss to Nicholas County.

Leading Lewis County in its season opener, Braedyn McGlone rushed 20 times for 166 yards and three touchdowns.

The Hornets and Lions did not meet during the 2022 high school football season.

“This is a new week, and we are short on preparation because of the Saturday game,” said Magoffin County Coach John DeRossett. “We also have to take in the safety and health of our players with the extreme heat this week. Still, we will get our preparation in, have a simple game plan and execute in all three phases of the game.”

The Hornets will face another challenge after pushing Montgomery County in the season opener.

“Lewis County is a good team coached by my friend, Gene Peterson,” confided DeRossett. “It will be a good time. Anytime you get to coach a good group of young men and see a friend on a Friday night, you have to consider yourself blessed.”

Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Lewis County football game is set for 8 p.m. in Vanceburg.
