Hornets top Tigers, 56-48

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County topped visiting Paintsville 56-48 in a 57th District boys’ basketball game on Tuesday, Jan. 31.

After notching the win, Magoffin County improved to 12-9 overall and 3-1 in the 57th District.

Paintsville dropped to 9-12 overall and 0-4 in the 57th District after suffering the loss.

The Hornets took a lead out of each quarter.

Magoffin County led 25-23 at halftime.

Maintaining a single digit lead midway through the second half, Magoffin County led 40-38 at the end of the third quarter.

Magoffin County and Paintsville battled back and forth throughout the second half, swapping leads before the Hornets pulled away to claim the district win.

Aden Barnett scored a game-high 26 points to lead the Hornets. Barnett was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures in scoring.

Nearly reaching double figures for the Hornets, Ben Lafferty and Ethan Salyer netted nine points apiece.

Aiding Magoffin County in the district win, Zane Whitaker added seven points and Grayson Whitaker contributed five points.

Connor Fugate scored 22 points to pace the Tigers. Accompanying Fugate in double figures for Paintsville, Jase Kinner netted 11 points.

Chipping in offensively, AJ James (five points), Ethan Cole (three points) and Brock Woods (two points) accounted for the rest of Paintsville’s individual scoring.

The win allowed Magoffin County to sweep a two-game 57th District boys’ basketball regular season series from Paintsville.

Both Magoffin County and Paintsville will compete in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament in less than one month.
