Hornets upend Prestonsburg, 74-60

Visiting Magoffin County upended Prestonsburg 74-60 in a boys’ high school basketball regular season finale on Friday, March 12.

PRESTONSBURG – Visiting Magoffin County upended Prestonsburg 74-60 in a boys’ high school basketball regular season finale on Friday, March 12.

With the win, Magoffin County improved to 12-11.

Prestonsburg dropped to 9-13 with the loss.

Magoffin County shot 49.2 percent (29-of-59) from the field in the winning effort. The Hornets were 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 68.8 percent (11-of-16) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 33 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Barnett was 8-of-10 from the free throw line.

Joining Barnett in double figures for the Hornets, Zane Whitaker netted 13 points.

Following the two scorers in double figures for Magoffin County, Ben Lafferty (nine points), Isaiah Salyer (eight points), Grayson Whitaker (seven points) and Ethan Pewitt (four points) contributed offensively.

Prestonsburg shot 50 percent (23-of-46) from the field. The Blackcats were 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Prestonsburg shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

Ryan Rose paced Prestonsburg, scoring 19 points and pulling down seven rebounds for the Blackcats.

Accompanying Rose in double figures for Prestonsburg, Will Gullett netted 18 points.

Along with the two scorers in double figures, Jon Little (seven points), Wes Salisbury (six points), Jacob Martin (five points) and Connor Hopkins (five points) provided scoring for the Blackcats.

Magoffin County was set to face Paintsville in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament Semifinals on Wednesday, March 17.
