Lady Hornets come up short in district tournament

PAINTSVILLE — Magoffin County turned in a solid defensive performance but fell short as Martin County prevailed 52-38 in the semifinals of the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Johnson Central High School’s Paul R. Setser Eagle Field House on Monday, Feb. 21.

Following the loss, Magoffin County exited the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season 7-24.

Martin County outscored the Lady Hornets 12-2 in the opening quarter. However, Magoffin County fared better in the second quarter. After hitting a putback at the buzzer prior to halftime, Martin County led 16-11.

Adding to its lead after halftime, Martin County led 39-21 at the conclusion of the third quarter.

Magoffin County connected on nine of 38 attempts from the field. The Lady Hornets shot 25 percent (two-of-eight) from three-point range.

Magoffin County shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the free throw line.

Angel Mullis recorded a double-double to lead Magoffin County, scoring 18 points and pulling down 13 rebounds for the Lady Hornets.

Nearly reaching double figures for Magoffin County, Kennedy Williams netted eight points.

Magoffin County featured six different scorers as Abby Barnett (five points), Karah Lafferty (four points), Kara Risner (two points) and Jaylen McCarty (one point) were also involved offensively.

Martin County (21-6) is scheduled to meet Paintsville (18-11) in the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament title game at on Thursday, Feb. 24.
