Lady Hornets outlast Fairview, 46-43

ASHLAND – Magoffin County returned to the win column on the road on Thursday, Jan. 28, outlasting Fairview 46-43 in a girls’ high school basketball game.

The win allowed Magoffin County to halt a six-game losing skid.

Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Justin Williams, defeated Fairview for the second time in the 2020-21 girls’ high school basketball season.

After notching the win, Magoffin County improved to 3-7.

Fairview dropped to 2-8 following the loss.

Magoffin County shot 29.6 percent (16-of-54) from the field. The Lady Hornets were 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from 3-point range.

Magoffin County shot 55.6 percent (10-of-18) from the free throw line.

Angel Mullis led Magoffin County with a double-double, scoring 15 points and pulling down 16 rebounds.

Accompanying Mullis in double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Karah Lafferty added 15 points as well.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s individual scoring, Stephanie Helton netted eight points, Jaylen McCarty contributed four points and Haley Barnett and Kennedy Williams chipped in two points apiece
Controlling the backboards, Magoffin County outrebounded Fairview 39-34.

Fairview shot 29.8 percent (17-of-57) from the field. The Lady Eagles were 5-of-17 (29.4 percent) from 3-point range.

Fairview finished 4-of-9 (44.4 percent) from the free throw line.

Josey Nelson paced Fairview with a double-double, scoring a game-high 16 points and claiming a team-best 10 rebounds.

Accompanying Nelson in double figures in scoring for Fairview, Kiera Loving netted 10 points.

Chipping in offensively for Fairview, Mia Newton added eight points, Grace Worthington posted five points and Ashton Stidham contributed four points.
