Magoffin County defeats Phelps for first win

PHELPS – Visiting Magoffin County defeated Phelps 44-31 for its first win in the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season on Friday, Dec. 3.

Magoffin County shot 37.5 percent (15-of-40) from the field. The Lady Hornets won despite finishing 0-for-11 from three-point range.

Magoffin County finished 14-of-29 from the free throw line.

Under the direction of head coach Justin Williams, Magoffin County gradually pulled away for the win.

Angel Mullis led Magoffin County with a double-double, scoring 20 points and claiming 13 rebounds. Mullins was the only Magoffin County player to reach double figures.

Narrowly missing double figures in scoring for the Lady Hornets, Karah Lafferty contributed nine points.

The additional scorers for Magoffin County in the winning effort were Kara Risner (five points), Abby Barnett (three points), Kennedy Williams (two points), Abigail Bradley (two points), Emily Sluss (two points) and Jaylen McCarty (one point).

Struggling offensively, Phelps shot 17.3 percent from the field, connecting on only nine of 52 shot attempts. Phelps connected on four of 19 three-point field goal attempts.

Hitting less than half of its foul shots, Phelps shot 42.9 percent (nine of 21) from the free throw line.

Caleigh McCoy scored 14 points to pace Phelps. McCoy was the only Phelps player to reach double figures in scoring.

Ivy Layne (six points), Jaycie Stanley (six points), Skylar Rife (two points), Hailey Blankenship (two points), Bailey Norman (one point) and Amelia Casey (one point) accounted for the rest of Phelps’ scoring in the hoops matchup.

Magoffin County is scheduled to host Phelps for a girls’ high school basketball game on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2022.
