Magoffin County-Prestonsburg opener scheduled for hoops season

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is slated to tip off the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season on the road in neighboring Floyd County at Prestonsburg on Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Longtime rivals from neighboring districts, Magoffin County and Prestonsburg met twice during the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season. Prestonsburg notched a pair of wins over Magoffin County during the previous prep hoops campaign. However, Magoffin County pushed Prestonsburg during each matchup in the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season.

Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Justin Williams, showed improvement in its latest campaign. The Lady Hornets notched wins over Phelps, East Ridge, June Buchanan and Wolfe County during the 2021-22 girls’ high school basketball season. In its most recent campaign, Magoffin County notched a pair of wins over Phelps, East Ridge and June Buchanan.

After tipping off the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season at Prestonsburg, Magoffin County is slated to host Floyd Central for a home opener on Friday, Dec. 2.

The Lady Hornets’ 2022-23 schedule has not been finalized. However, Phelps, East Ridge, June Buchanan, Paintsville, Johnson Central and Pike County Central are additional opponents that Magoffin County already has games scheduled against for the upcoming campaign.

Several experienced players are due back on the court for Magoffin County in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season.

Prior to tipping off the upcoming hoops campaign, Justin Williams-coached Magoffin County will compete in the preseason.

The Lady Hornets will open practice in mid-October.
