Magoffin County teams prepare to kick off seasons

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County football teams from all levels are preparing to take the field for season openers.

Hornets of all ages made strides on the gridiron in 2022 and are carrying momentum over into the upcoming campaign. Magoffin County fielded one of the state’s top fifth-sixth grade football teams, the seventh-eighth grade squad excelled, and the Hornets advanced to the KHSAA Class 3A Playoffs on the high school level in 2022.

Over the offseason, Magoffin County hosted a pair of combines that were open to football players in grades 3-12. Magoffin County will continue to host combines annually.

“Every evening, Magoffin Mountain is packed with players, coaches, parents and family members from grades 3-12,” commented Magoffin County High School Head Coach John DeRossett. “It is exciting to see how football is growing in Magoffin County because of all of these people. We all pitch in to be the best that we can be and make football a fun activity for our students. Sometimes, people will say, isn’t that a distraction? Well, I know of no better place that kids can spend a few hours a day. It gets hectic, but it is fun to witness. I thank everyone in this community who helps us make it a great place to play football.”

Individually, Magoffin County features some of the state’s top football players on multiple levels.

Currently conducting preseason practices, Magoffin County football teams are back on the gridiron looking to contend for titles.
