BREATHITT COUNTY – A Magoffin County man was pronounced deceased at an abandoned mine in Breathitt County last Thursday.
According to the Breathitt County coroner, they were called to Old Mine Number Two on Mine Shaft Road around 10 p.m. on July 17.
According to officials, John Mullins, 45, of Magoffin County, and his cousin were reportedly searching for ginseng and yellowroot near the mine and both entered. Mullins cousin told officials that Mullins went deeper into the mine and after 5 – 10 minutes had passed, he yelled for Mullins, who started to come back out of the mine. Mullins reportedly collapsed while he was attempting to go toward the mine’s exit, and he was pronounced deceased a the seen just before 11 p.m.
Mullins’ body was sent to the state medical examiner’s office in Frankfort and no cause of death has been released at this time.
