On Wednesday morning as we were preparing to send the newspaper to press, the Salyersville Independent was informed of the death of Scotty B. Patrick. Patrick was the longtime chairman of the board at Salyersville National Bank and chairman of the Magoffin County Community Foundation, being instrumental in the creation and ongoing success of Magoffin County Community Day, which raises funds for local nonprofit groups each year. He most recently donated $5 million to Magoffin County Schools to build a new, state-of-the-art career and technical center, which opened the school system to being able to receive matching funds so they could build the career-focused center for Magoffin County students at no cost to the community. The legacy Patrick leaves will be continue to shape this community for many years to come. The SI will have a larger story and an obituary for Patrick in next week’s paper, but we couldn’t allow this paper to go to press without acknowledging this huge loss to the community.
