PIKEVILLE — The University of Pikeville men’s and women’s swim teams competed against WVU-Tech on Saturday, Oct. 19.
On the men’s side, the UPIKE 200-medley relay team of Bryce Barton, RJ Goins, Jacob Rubado and Zane Whitaker scored a pair of team points after finishing third. UPIKE also took third in the 200-freestyle relay.
Rubado finished second in the 100-breaststroke and third in the 50-freestyle.
Whitaker swam a 25.80 in the 50-freestyle to finish fourth. A key contributor for the Bears, Whitaker also finished third in the 100-freestyle with a time of 57.39 and scored three team points for the Bears.
Ryder Slone swam a 26.08 in the 50-freestyle, then scored three points after taking third in the 100-individual medley. Slone also took fifth in the 100-freestyle.
Goins claimed second in the 200-individual medley and the 500-freestyle.
Barton scored four team points in the 200-backstroke and 100-backstroke, then scored three in the 100-butterfly.
On the women’s side, Madelyn Smith scored nine team points after swimming a 2:33.04 in the 200-freestyle. Smith took first in the 100-breastroke with a time of 1:17.87. Smith also took the top spot in the 500-freestyle with a time of 6:39.33.
Daylin Patrick placed second in the 50-freestyle with a time of 32.69.
Patrick also took second in the 100-backstroke and the 100-freestyle.
Whitaker and Patrick are Magoffin County High School graduates.
WVU-Tech’s men’s and women’s teams tallied 221 points while UPIKE’s squads scored 75.
The UPIKE swim teams are scheduled to visit Shawnee State
University in Portsmouth, Ohio on Saturday, Nov. 9.
