SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County scored nearly 40 points, but it wasn’t enough as Estill County won 74-38 in a Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Sept. 25.
Magoffin County slipped to 2-4 overall and opened 0-1 in Class 3A, District 8 after absorbing the loss
Estill County improved to 5-1 overall and opened 1-0 in Class 3A, District 8 after notching the win.
Magoffin County hosted Estill County for Homecoming.
Both the Hornets and the Engineers owned momentum at various times during the Class 3A, District 8 game.
Quarterback Brody Mainous led Estill County to the win. On the ground, Mainous rushed 22 times for 187 yards and seven touchdowns. Through the air, Mainous completed 12 passes for 185 yards and one touchdown.
Hunter Bingham emerged as Estill County’s leading receiver, hauling in five receptions for 79 yards and one touchdown.
Contributing to Estill County’s rushing attack, Matthew Partin took 18 carries for 162 yards and two touchdowns.
Delivering on each side of the ball, Bingham recorded a game-high 10 tackles for the Engineers.
Running back Blake Wireman paced Magoffin County on the ground, rushing 24 times for 195 yards and one touchdown.
Aiding Magoffin County on the ground, Aden Montgomery, another running back, rushed nine times for 30 times and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Cole Howard paced Magoffin County through the air, completing six passes for 98 yard and two touchdowns.
Jairen Howard led the Hornets in receiving. Howard hauled in five receptions for 94 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively for Magoffin County, Bryce Buckallew recorded a team-best nine tackles. Following Buckallew in the key defensive category, Montgomery and Peck posted eight tackles apiece while Caleb Lovely tallied seven tackles.
Buckallew and Montgomery each recorded two tackles for losses.
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Powell County for another Class 3A, District 8 game on Friday, Oct 2.
