BELFRY – Magoffin County was held scoreless in overtime as host Belfry pulled away to win 81-71 in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic on Saturday, Feb. 20.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 7-7.
Belfry improved to 8-7 with the win.
Magoffin County faltered after carrying a lead out of each of the first three quarters. The Hornets led 42-29 at halftime.
After battling back to tie the game 71-71 and send the matchup into overtime, Belfry blanked Magoffin County 10-0 in the extra period.
Belfry shot 52.2 percent (35-of-67) from the field. The Pirates were 5-of-14 from 3-point range, shooting 35.7 percent beyond the arc.
Belfry shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the free throw line.
Much-improved Belfry featured four scorers in double figures.
Leading the Pirates offensively and narrowly missing a double-double, Sal Dean scored 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
Bol Kuir delivered a double-double for Belfry, scoring 20 points and hauling in 11 rebounds.
Following Kuir in scoring for Belfry, DeMahjae Clark and Tyler Chaffin added 13 points apiece.
Rounding out Belfry’s individual scoring, Caleb Spears and Ben McNamee chipped in seven points and six points, respectively.
Aden Barnett led Magoffin County, scoring a game-high 24 points for the Hornets. Accompanying Barnett in double figures in scoring for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker netted 22 points and Isaiah Salyer added 13 points,
Rounding out Magoffin County’s individual scoring, Kaden Bowling and Ben Lafferty chipped in eight points and four points, respectively.
In the other boys’ high school basketball games played in the Mountain Schoolboy Classic it was Johnson Central 74, Pikeville 69 and Shelby Valley 68, Prestonsburg 43.
