Hornets fall to Golden Eagles in district tournament

INEZ — Magoffin County suffered a season-ending loss as Johnson Central pulled away to win 18-0 in three innings in the semifinals of the 57th District Baseball Tournament at Martin County High School on Monday, May 20.

The loss eliminated Magoffin County from the 57th District Baseball Tournament. Magoffin County exited the 2024 high school baseball season 2-17.

Johnson Central took control early, crossing home plate three times during the bottom half of the first inning.

Extending its lead, Johnson Central erupted for 15 runs in the bottom half of the second inning to put the game completely out of Magoffin County’s reach.

Chase Preece pitched a one-hit shutout for Johnson Central and earned the win on the mound. Preece struck out two Magoffin County batters.

Kaden Litteral started on the mound for Magoffin County and took the loss. Litteral struck out one Johnson Central batter.

Chipping in on the mound for Magoffin County, Ethan Salyer made a relief appearance.

Johnson Central scored 18 runs on eight hits. Preece (one hit, two RBIs), Brayden Shepherd (three hits, three RBIs), Boston Crace (two hits, one RBI), Kaleb Callaham (one hit, three RBIs), Kyler Callaham (one hit, one RBI), Alex Marcum (one RBI) and Ethan McCarty (one RBI) each excelled offensively for the Golden Eagles.

Breaking up a no-hitter, Litteral connected for Magoffin County’s lone hit in the district tournament game.
