Hornets finish runner-up to Cardinals in 57th District

INEZ — Magoffin County came up short as Martin County prevailed 83-73 in the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game on Thursday, Feb. 29.

Both Martin County and Magoffin County advanced to the 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament.

Martin County shot 48.4 percent (30-of-62) from the field. The Cardinals made six of 23 three-point field goal attempts.

Martin County shot 77.3 percent (17-of-22) from the free throw line.

Luke Hale scored 20 points to lead a balanced Martin County scoring effort. Hale is a longtime leader for the Cardinals.

Joining Hale in double figures for Martin County, Brayden McKenzie scored 18 points, Jacob Sturgell netted 16 points and Devan Maynard posted 12 points.

Narrowly missing double figures for Martin County, Peyton Davis added nine points while Bryson Dials contributed eight points.

Magoffin County shot 39.4 percent (28-of-71) from the field. The Hornets made seven of 26 three-point field goal attempts.

Magoffin County shot 66.7 percent (10-of-15) from the free throw line.

Zane Whitaker scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Hornets. Whitaker connected on shots from various parts of the court.

Delivering a double-double for Magoffin County, 15th Region Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year Aden Barnett scored 23 points and cleared out a game-high 12 rebounds.

Following Barnett, Ethan Salyer netted 12 points while Grayson Whitaker posted 11 points.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s scoring, Walker Russell chipped in three points.
