Hornets’ first scrimmage moved to Saturday, Aug. 6

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County has moved its first scrimmage in the 2022 high school football preseason to Saturday, Aug. 6.

The Hornets, under the direction of head coach John DeRossett, opened preseason practice on Monday, July 11. DeRossett is set to guide Magoffin County in his first season as the Hornets’ head coach.

Shelby Valley is scheduled to visit Magoffin County for the preseason matchup. Previously, Magoffin County was slated to host Shelby Valley for a scrimmage on Friday, Aug. 5.

The scrimmage was moved due to the recent flooding that occurred throughout Eastern Kentucky.

“We have only been able to practice two out of the last eight days because the water is over the bridge to our stadium,” DeRossett confided at the start of the week. “It’s not the worst thing when you think about all the devastation the flood of 2022 has brought to our people in Eastern Kentucky. We continue to pray and reach out to those who have lost so much. We will do what we can as far as football. We will use our two scrimmages as practices and get back to regular practice when the water goes down. We are still trying to acclimate our players and fit gear. We have moved our scrimmage with Shelby Valley to get another practice in before we go up against an opposing team.”

Magoffin County concluded the 2021 high school football season 6-4, finishing third in Class 3A, District 8. Several experienced players are back on the field for the Hornets.

Magoffin County’s 2022 schedule includes games versus Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.

Shelby Valley competes in Class 2A, District 8. The Wildcats, following a third-place finish in Class 2A, District 8, exited the 2021 high school football season 5-6. Shelby Valley’s 2022 schedule includes games versus Letcher County Central, Pike County Central, Floyd Central, North Laurel, West Carter, Prestonsburg, Martin County, East Ridge, Bath County and Hazard.

Magoffin County and Shelby Valley did not meet during the 2021 high school football season.

The start time for the Magoffin County-Shelby Valley scrimmage is 7 p.m.
