Hornets matched up with Perry Central in DJ Begley Classic

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is matched up with Perry County Central in the annual DJ Begley Classic.

The Hornets will meet the Commodores in the DJ Begley Classic at Hazard High School at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 1.

Perry County Central topped Magoffin County 80-63 in the 2022 DJ Begley Classic.

Following a loss in the semifinals of the 57th District Boys’ Basketball Tournament, Magoffin County exited the 2022-23 season 16-11.

Under the direction of Coach Scott Castle, Magoffin County will enter the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season ranked among the 15th Region’s top teams.

Perry County Central is a perennial contender for the 14th Region boys’ basketball title. After falling to Breathitt County in the 14th Region Boys’ Basketball Tournament title game, Shannon Hoskins-coached Perry County Central exited the 2022-23 season 20-15.

Several experienced players are due back on the court for Magoffin County in the 2023-24 boys’ high school basketball season.

The Hornets will open preseason practice in mid-October.
