Hornets on pace to rush for over 2,000 yards

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County is on pace to rush for over 2,000 yards in the 2024 high school football season.

Through eight games, Magoffin County has rushed 334 times for 1,809 yards and 19 touchdowns.

The Hornets are averaging 226.1 rushing yards and 2.4 rushing touchdowns per game.

Freshman running back Blake Wireman leads the Hornets’ rushing attack. Wireman has rushed 136 times for 998 yards and 10 touchdowns.

A standout as a freshman, Wireman has scored a team-high 72 points for the Hornets.

Following Wireman on the ground for Magoffin County, junior running back Braxton Montgomery has rushed 98 times for 506 yards and three touchdowns. Montgomery is the Hornets’ second-leading rusher.

Behind Montgomery, junior quarterback Dason Burchett has rushed 85 times for 206 yards and four touchdowns for the Hornets.

Chipping in on the ground, Jackson Gilliland and Trey Rudd have added one rushing touchdown apiece for the Hornets.

In all, seven different Magoffin County players have rushed for positive yardage.

Magoffin County is open the week of Friday, Oct. 18. The Hornets have regular season games remaining versus Estill County and rival Morgan County. Magoffin County is scheduled to host Estill County for a Class 3A, District 8 matchup on Friday, Oct. 25. The Hornets will entertain the Engineers for a home finale.
