INEZ — Magoffin County performed well in several areas in a loss at Martin County on Friday, Sept. 20.
Martin County held on to defeat the Hornets 28-22 in a non-district game.
With the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 1-4.
Martin County improved to 4-1 after posting the win.
Registering its fourth straight win, Martin County rushed 30 times for 243 yards and four touchdowns. Quarterback Devan Maynard led Martin County on the ground, rushing 20 times for 177 yards and four touchdowns in the Cardinals’ win. Limited through the air, Maynard completed three of nine passes for 44 yards. The Martin County quarterback threw two interceptions.
Crayson Lafferty (17 tackles), Zachary Hamilton (15 tackles), Mason McCoy (13 tackles) and Weston Jude (11 tackles) combined to pace Martin County defensively. Delivering a turnover for Martin County, Maynard recorded an interception.
Magoffin County rushed 48 times for 231 yards and two touchdowns. Braxton Montgomery paced Magoffin County on the ground, rushing 18 times for 121 yards.
Following Montgomery in Magoffin County’s rushing attack, Blake Wireman rushed 15 times for 90 yards and one touchdown.
Chipping in on the ground for Magoffin County, quarterback Dason Burchett added another rushing touchdown.
Through the air, Burchett completed four of 10 passes for 49 yards. The Magoffin County quarterback threw one interception.
Wireman hauled in two of Burchett’s four completions. Chipping in offensively for Magoffin County, Jackson Gilliland and Brayden Standifer added one reception apiece.
Kicker Kevin Garcia paced Magoffin County on special teams. Garcia connected on each of his extra-point kick attempts.
Defensively for Magoffin County, Standifer provided a team-high 10 tackles.
Following Standifer in Magoffin County’s defensive effort, Curtis Jenkins posted nine tackles and Caleb Perkins registered seven tackles.
Active in Magoffin County’s secondary, Burchett and Jenkins each recorded one interception for the Hornets.
Magoffin County is scheduled to visit Belfry for its Class 3A, District 8 opener on Friday, Sept. 27.
