Hornets score season-high nine runs in loss to Cardinals

SALYERSVILLE — Magoffin County excelled offensively but it wasn’t enough as Martin County held on to win 13-9 in a 57th District game on Thursday, April 18.

The Hornets hosted Martin County for their home opener in the 2024 high school baseball season.

Pitching in relief for Martin County, Knox Maynard earned the win.

Another reliever for the Cardinals, Chase Stacy, claimed the save.

In addition to Maynard and Stacy, Aiden Horn pitched in relief for the Cardinals.

Ryan Stephens started on the mound for visiting Martin County.

Pitching in relief for Magoffin County, Cayden Russell took the loss.

Another hurler, Kaden Litteral, started on the mound for the Hornets.

Russell and Litteral combined to record six strikeouts.

Martin County scored 13 runs on nine hits. Stacy (two hits, one RBI), Horn (two hits, one RBI), Stephens (two hits, two RBIs), Collin Mills (one hit, one RBI), Eli Mills (one hit) and Damian Cheek (one hit) delivered offensively for the Cardinals. Stacy, Stephens and Cheek each doubled.

Magoffin County scored nine runs on 12 hits. Russell (two hits, one RBI), Litteral (one hit, one RBI), Ian McCarty (four hits, three RBIs), Brayden Bailey (two hits, one RBI), Gavin Arnett (two hits) and Noah Gibson (one hit, one RBI) each produced offensively for the Hornets. Providing an extra-base hit for Magoffin County, McCarty, who delivered four hits and three RBIs, doubled.

Martin County 17, Magoffin County 7 (6 innings): Magoffin County couldn’t battle back from behind as Martin County pulled away to win 17-7 in six innings in a 57th District game in Inez on Wednesday, April 17.

Evan Mills started on the mound for Magoffin County and earned the win. Mills pitched four innings and recorded four strikeouts.

Following Mills, Dylan Hale and Hunter Moore each made relief appearances for the Cardinals.

Isaac Howard started on the mound for Magoffin County and suffered the loss.

In addition to Howard, Magoffin County sent Brayden Bailey and Gavin Arnett out to pitch during the district matchup.

Martin County scored 16 runs on 10 hits. Mills (two hits, one RBI), Hale (one RBI), Moore (two hits, two RBIs), Brock Messer (three hits, two RBIs), Aiden Horn (two hits, one RBI), Chase Stacy (one hit, one RBI) and Ryan Stephens (one RBI) each delivered at the plate in Martin County’s 10-run win.

Magoffin County managed to score seven runs on eight hits. Bailey (one hit, one RBI), Arnett (two hits, two RBIs), Ian McCarty (two hits, two RBIs), Connor Blanton (two hits) and Carter Whitaker (one hit, one RBI) each contributed offensively for the Hornets.
