Hornets show improvement in loss to Wildcats

ROBINSON CREEK — Magoffin County showed improvement but couldn’t break into the win column as Shelby Valley prevailed 7-5 in a matchup between 15th Region rivals on Monday, March 25.

Following the loss, Magoffin County dropped to 0-3.

Magoffin County owned multiple leads. However, Shelby Valley made the most of its offensive opportunities.

Magoffin County led 5-2 at the conclusion of the fourth inning. Answering, Shelby Valley scored four runs in the top half of the fifth inning to move ahead of the Hornets.

Pitching in relief for Shelby Valley, Riley Newsome claimed the win. Newsome held Magoffin County scoreless and posted four strikeouts over three and one-third innings.

Along with Newsome, Brock Damron pitched in relief for the Wildcats.

Brady Bentley started on the mound for Shelby Valley and pitched the first two innings. Bentley recorded five strikeouts.

Pitching in relief for Magoffin County, Connor Blanton suffered the loss. Blanton pitched one-third of an inning and struck out one Shelby Valley batter.

Isaac Howard started on the mound for the Hornets. Howard pitched four innings for Magoffin County and recorded seven strikeouts.

Along with Blanton, Kaden Litteral pitched in relief for the Hornets. Litteral pitched two and two-thirds innings and logged five strikeouts.

Each team recorded four hits.

Both Bryce Bentley and Brady Bentley doubled for the Wildcats. Brady Bentley (one hit, two RBIs), Bryce Bentley (one hit, one RBI), Carter Justice (one hit) and Kobe Fields (one hit, one RBI) each delivered offensively for the Wildcats.

Litteral (one hit), Cayden Russell (one hit, two RBIs), Gavin Arnett (one hit), Brayden Bailey (one hit) and Austin Russell (one RBI) each produced offensively for the Hornets.

Defensively, Shelby Valley and Magoffin County committed two errors apiece.
