Hornets start strong in Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic

GATLINBURG, Tenn. — Magoffin County started strong in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic, registering a win before dropping back-to-back games.

The Hornets compiled a 1-2 record in the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic.

Magoffin County 71, Wilson Central (Tenn.) 52: Magoffin County rolled past Wilson Central (Tenn.) 71-52 in the opening round of the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 20.

The Hornets shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field. Magoffin County made three of 14 three-point field goal attempts.

The Hornets shot 87.5 percent (14-of-16) from the free throw line in the winning effort.

Aden Barnett scored a game-high 30 points to lead Magoffin County to the win. Barnett connected on seven of seven free throw attempts.

Joining Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Walker Russell scored 19 points and Grayson Whitaker netted 11 points.

Delivering Magoffin County’s additional scoring, Noah Sammons tallied six points and Zane Whitaker contributed five points.

Archbishop Shaw (La.) 78, Magoffin County 65: Magoffin County slipped into the loss column as Archbishop Shaw (La.) prevailed 78-65 in the second round of the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic on Thursday, Dec. 21.

The Hornets lost despite shooting 55.1 percent (27-of-49) from the field. Magoffin County made three of 12 three-point field goal attempts.

The Hornets shot 66.7 percent (eight-of-12) from the free throw line.

Aden Barnett poured in a game-high 38 points to lead the Hornets.

Barnett connected on 16 of 23 shots from inside the arc.

Accompanying Barnett in double figures for Magoffin County, Zane Whitaker scored 12 points and Grayson Whitaker netted 11 points.

Rounding out Magoffin County’s scoring, Ethan Salyer and Walker Russell added two points apiece.

McMinn County (Tenn.) 63, Magoffin County 60: Magoffin County came up short as McMinn County (Tenn.) held on to win 63-60 in the final round of the Smoky Mountain Christmas Classic on Friday, Dec. 22.

The reigning Kentucky 2A – Section 8 Champion, Magoffin County shot 50 percent (20-of-40) from the field. However, Magoffin County made only one of eight free throw attempts.

The Hornets managed to shoot 65.5 percent (19-of-26) from the free throw line.

Nearly recording a double-double, Walker Russell scored 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Hornets.

Accompanying Russell in double figures for Magoffin County, Zane Whitaker scored 17 points and Grayson Whitaker netted 10 points.

Five players accounted for all of Magoffin County’s scoring.

Chipping in offensively for the Hornets, Aden Barnett added eight points and Ethan Salyer contributed one point.
