Hornets suffer loss to Panthers

PIKEVILLE — Magoffin County slipped into the loss column on the road as Pikeville pulled away to win 66-51 in a late-season boys’ high school basketball game on Tuesday, Feb. 20.

Pikeville, the current frontrunner in the 15th Region, shot 54 percent (27-of-50) from the field. The Panthers shot 61.1 percent (11-of-18) from three-point range, thriving beyond the arc.

Pikeville shot 50 percent (four-of-eight) from the free throw line.

Ian Onkst scored 16 points to lead the Panthers. Onkst connected on four of six three-point field goal attempts.

Accompanying Onkst in double figures for Pikeville, Josh Hughes scored 12 points and Charlie Fitzer netted 10 points.

Following the three scorers in double figures, Heath Jarrell (eight points), Carter Hurley (seven points), Cole Slone (six points), Eli Johnson (five points) and EB Walters (five points) provided Pikeville’s additional scoring.

Magoffin County shot 39.1 percent (18-of-46) from the field. The Hornets made five of 21 three-point field goal attempts.

Magoffin County shot 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the free throw line.

The Hornets managed to outrebound the Panthers 30-23.

Zane Whitaker scored 21 points to lead the Hornets. Whitaker connected on seven of eight free throw attempts.

Along with Whitaker reaching double figures for Magoffin County, Aden Barnett scored 11 points and Walker Russell posted 10 points.

Chipping in offensively for Magoffin County, Grayson Whitaker added six points and Noah Sammons contributed three points.

Russell paced Magoffin County inside, clearing out a game-high 16 rebounds.
