Lady Hornets fall to Martin County in district tournament

PAINTSVILLE — Magoffin County pushed but couldn’t prevail as Martin County pulled away to win 66-48 in the semifinals of the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament at Paintsville High School on Monday, Feb. 20.

The loss ousted Magoffin County from the girls’ high school basketball postseason.

Magoffin County shot 42.1 percent (16-of-38) from the field. The Lady Hornets connected on two of seven three-point field goal attempts.

Magoffin County shot 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the free throw line.

Karah Lafferty led Magoffin County with a double-double, scoring 21 points and claiming 10 rebounds.

Accompanying Lafferty in double figures for Magoffin County, Kennedy Williams netted 10 points.

Chipping in offensively, Angel Mullis (six points), Abby Barnett (four points), Macy Williams (three points), Emily Sluss (two points) and Abigail Bradley (two points) provided Magoffin County’s additional scoring in the postseason matchup.

Magoffin County suffered its third loss to Martin County in the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season.

After notching the win, Martin County (24-5) advanced to meet Paintsville in the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament championship game. Winning on its home court, Paintsville knocked off crosstown rival Johnson Central 44-41 in the opening game of the 57th District Girls’ Basketball Tournament.

Much-improved Magoffin County, under the direction of Coach Justin Williams, exited the 2022-23 girls’ high school basketball season 10-19.
