Lady Hornets fall to Shelby Valley in 2021 season debut

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County fell behind and couldn’t battle back as visiting Shelby Valley, a 15th Region rival, pulled away to win 11-5 in a high school softball season opener on Monday, March 29.

The Lady Hornets lost despite outhitting Shelby Valley 13-9.

Shelby Valley pitcher Lily Napier pitched a complete game and earned the win. Napier registered 14 strikeouts over seven innings.

Olivia Browning finished 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Shelby Valley offensively.

Helping per pitching cause at the plate, Napier finished 2-for-4 with four RBIs.

Another Shelby Valley batter, Beth Werner, drove in two runs.

Jaden Williams and Holly Handshoe split time in the circle for homestanding Magoffin County. Williams pitched 4.2 innings and suffered the loss. She recorded seven strikeouts.

Handshoe pitched 2.1 innings and recorded three strikeouts.

Magoffin County, under the direction of head coach Tony Skaggs, connected for hits throughout he season opener.

Offensively, Magoffin County collected 13 hits. Pacing Magoffin County at the plate, Williams, Emilee Bailey and Scarlett McCarty recorded three hits apiece.

Following the trio, Handshoe added two hits and two RBIs. Handshoe drilled two doubles.

Contributing at the plate for Magoffn County, Katie Howard and Presley Smith added one hit apiece.

Handshoe delivered two RBIs for Magoffin County while Williams, Howard and Smith drove in one run apiece.
