Lady Hornets set to open season at home vs. Shelby Valley

Magoffin County is set to host 15th Region rival Shelby Valley for an opener in the 2021 high school softball season on Monday, March 29.

SALYERSVILLE – Magoffin County is set to host 15th Region rival Shelby Valley for an opener in the 2021 high school softball season on Monday, March 29.

First pitch for the Magoffin County-Shelby Valley softball season is set for 6 p.m.

The Lady Hornets are set to return to the field for a regular season game for the first time since 2019.

Magoffin County is ranked fifth in the Kentucky Softball Coaches Association Preseason 15th Region Poll.

The poll features teams from three different districts within the 15th Region.

Lawrence County, Shelby Valley, Pikeville and Johnson Central are ranked ahead of the Lady Hornets. Preseason favorite Johnson Central captured the 2019 15th Region softball title. Magoffin County and Johnson Central are longtime 57th District rivals.

Former 15th Region frontrunner Magoffin County compiled an 11-9 record during the 2019 high school softball season.

High school softball teams around the state are preparing to compete in season openers.

Magoffin County’s 2021 schedule includes games versus Shelby Valley, Lawrence County, Pikeville, Johnson Central, Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Floyd Central, Belfry, Betsy Layne, Perry County Central, Rowan County, Martin County, Paintsville, Menifee County, Elliott County, Morgan County, Pike County Central and Robertson County.

The Lady Hornets are scheduled to play in the Lyndel Potter Memorial Tournament in Pikeville April 16-17.

Magoffin County, Johnson Central, Martin County and Paintsville make up the 57th District.
