Magoffin County closes in on first gridiron practice

SALYERSVILLE — The Hornets are headed back to the gridiron.
Magoffin County will open preseason practice at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 11.

Head coach John DeRossett is preparing to guide the Hornets in the 2022 high school football season. DeRossett took over as Magoffin County head coach in January. He replaced Chris Gamble, who stepped away from his post as the Hornets’ head coach following the end of the 2021 high school football season. Gamble guided Magoffin County to a 6-4 record in his final season on the high school football sidelines.

Magoffin County conducted workouts throughout the offseason, prior to the start of the KHSAA Dead Period. Recognized annually, the KHSAA Dead Period runs from June 25-July 9.

Several experienced players are due back on the field for Magoffin County in the 2022 high school football season.

The Hornets compete in Class 3A, District 8.

Magoffin County’s 2022 schedule includes games versus Breathitt County, Prestonsburg, Knott County Central, Bellevue, Lawrence County, Belfry, Floyd Central, Pike County Central, Clay County and Morgan County.

The Hornets are scheduled to visit former district rival Breathitt County for a season opener on Friday, Aug. 19. Kickoff for the Magoffin County-Breathitt County football game is set for 7:30 p.m. in Jackson.
